SANT CUGAT DEL VALLÈS, 1974Ester Pérez Broto

Ester Pérez Broto’s work reflects universal themes such as life, family, coexistence, companionship, compassion and affection.

After many years dedicated to photographic portraits, she has transferred to painting the most conceptual part of all those people she has portrayed throughout her career.

Graduated in Photography at the Institute of Photographic Studies of Catalonia, she has developed her professional career in various fields such as press, fashion and advertising.

In 2003 she opened her own photography studio and gallery in Sant Cugat del Vallès, specializing in portraiture, product photography and his own work for the decoration of spaces.

Among all these disciplines, the portrait has been the one that has marked his career and has served as a starting point on his way to painting.

This journey was recognized in 2009 when it was a finalist for the LUX National Professional Photography Award in the portrait category.

In her search for a more leisurely and introspective language, she discovered in painting the perfect tool to develop her own aesthetics. Her figures, with voluminous bodies and elongated hands, transmit emotions through hugs, company and affection. The chromatic harmony and the presence of volumes are constant elements that connect his works, creating a visual and emotional thread.

Her work reflects universal themes such as life, family, coexistence, companionship, compassion and affection. Although we are unique beings and, in many ways, strangers to each other, we all share a common path.

She paints groups of characters looking at each other, with large bodies and expressive hands, almost always in large format. These scenes, totally fictitious and improvised in an intuitive way, suggest a possible dialogue.

She prefers abstraction to realism, focusing on the search for color, the architecture of the characters and the dimension of the scene to create a space that invites the observer to enter it.

After many years dedicated to photographic portraiture, she has transferred to painting the most conceptual part of all those people she has portrayed throughout her career.

The spontaneity she once sought in photography has given way to contemplation, calm and observation. Now, through invented characters, with naïve but forceful strokes, she creates faces and bodies that transmit a certain connection and invite to a silent dialogue.

She has participated in several group exhibitions in Barcelona and, shortly, also in Australia. Currently, the Sala Rusiñol art gallery is hosting her first solo exhibition, an important step in her artistic career.
